New parents often have to juggle caring for their little one with work. Sometimes it’s hard to even think about taking a walk with a newborn, whose movements can feel like preparing for a climb up K2.
Choosing the right moment for the first walk with a newborn is an important milestone for every parent.
When? Where? How long?
These are just some of the questions we ask ourselves beforehand. However, just a few days after birth, if both mom and baby are feeling well, you can consider taking a first, short walk.
Every newborn is different; it’s best to rely primarily on your own instincts and observations of your baby, rather than on “well-meaning advice” from those around you. This is your baby—no one else spends as much time with them or is as close to them as you are to know their reactions and needs!
It’s also important to think through a few key issues, though...
- The health of the baby and the mother—a difficult labor or a C-section may mean that the mother’s body needs more time to recover. The baby, in turn, should be healthy, with no signs of infection.
- The weather—avoid extreme temperatures, such as heat waves or freezing cold. The best weather for the first walk is a warm day without rain or wind.
- The baby’s outfit – depending on the season, the newborn should be dressed appropriately. It’s important not to overheat or let the baby get cold. Dress the baby in layers that can be easily removed or added as needed.
- Duration – the first walk doesn’t have to be long—10–15 minutes is enough. Over time, you can gradually extend the walks while observing your baby’s reactions.
- Environment – choose a peaceful place, away from busy streets and noise. A park or a quiet neighborhood is ideal, where your little one can safely explore their surroundings (or sleep soundly).
Remember that walks aren’t just a way to get some fresh air, but also a great opportunity to relax together and build a relationship with your child… and with other parents.
Happy walks to young and old alike!
