An extremely interesting report from the Ministry of Digital Affairs has just been released, addressing the question: How do young people understand data?
Based on the Ministry of Digital Affairs’ latest report dated February 16, 2026, we can clearly see that Generation Z is highly tech-savvy but needs more support in understanding data processing mechanisms. As the OliEdu Civic Education Foundation, we have been emphasizing for years that true digital education is not just about knowing how to use apps, but above all:
- an understanding of where data comes from,
- knowledge of how data is used,
- awareness of how important data is for the safety and mental health of young people.
Data, Algorithms, and the Everyday Lives of Young People
Smartphones, social media, and algorithm-based apps—this is the natural environment of today’s teenagers. However, a survey of 2,000 people aged 15–18 reveals a disconnect: high technical competence does not go hand in hand with a deep understanding of data collection and processing.
Only a fraction of young people know that many apps use public data, and even fewer can identify their specific sources.
This highlights the importance of systematic and informed digital education in schools—based on facts, practical experience, and safety.
Cybersecurity and Mental Health—Our Priorities
At the OliEdu Foundation, we view cybersecurity as the foundation of children’s and young people’s mental well-being. A lack of knowledge about how algorithms work, how online activity is tracked, and the consequences of leaving digital traces can lead to:
- excessive social pressure,
- social media addiction,
- cyberbullying,
- low self-esteem,
- anxiety, and information overload.
For this reason, we conduct workshops, educational programs, and projects for schools that combine digital education with mental health prevention. As part of this educational mission, we also bring generations together to ensure online safety for seniors as well. At the OliEdu Civic Education Foundation, we teach, among other things:
- critical thinking,
- conscious management of one’s online presence,
- understanding the mechanisms that influence their emotions and decisions.

We appreciate the Ministry’s efforts
We commend the initiative of the Ministry of Digital Affairs, which, through the “Data 3.0 – Exchange, Value” project and the development of the dane.gov.pl portal, promotes the informed use of public data. Making hundreds of thousands of datasets available and conducting research on youth awareness is an important step toward building a mature digital society.
It is particularly valuable to emphasize that data can be a safe and reliable source of knowledge—if young people know how to use it.
Shared Responsibility
The report clearly shows that young people want to use technology but need guidance and systemic support. Schools, civic organizations, parents, and public administration must work together.
