In Małopolska, there aren’t enough resources to operate an ambulance equipped to transport newborns!
According to neonatology experts, there should be at least one transport ambulance for every 10,000 births. Meanwhile, over 28,000 children were born in Małopolska last year, and currently there is only one ambulance for infants in operation... By comparison, Silesia, for example, has four such ambulances. It must be equipped with special equipment, including an incubator.
This situation poses a real threat to the health and lives of infants throughout Małopolska. In Kraków, there are three specialized centers to which infants must be transported, for example,
- those with severe cardiac conditions,
- surgical conditions,
- cases of fetal distress, and others.
One of them is the “Ujastek” Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, Ltd., whose team has also warned of these risks and supports our appeal.
The Ministry of Health plans to begin purchasing the ambulance only in the fall. The Kraków Emergency Medical Service and the National Health Fund (NFZ) should immediately receive funding from the Ministry of Health to operate the infant ambulance! We cannot wait for a tragedy to occur, because every minute of delay in transporting newborns significantly increases the risk of serious health complications and poses a threat to their lives.
